‘Gelder Logistics is a stable and dynamic company’
From technical manager at a real estate investor in Amsterdam to logistics manager in Barneveld. Nick van Bekkum (41) took that step in the spring of 2024 to join Gijs Petersen in the daily management of Gelder Logistics and of Spyder Couriers and Transport. Nick talks about his new challenge, motivations and differences and similarities between real estate and logistics.
“I have known Gijs for more than 20 years. Since I worked with Gijs once, we have been very good friends. We have been talking about possibilities of doing something together for a long time, but this had never come to a concrete plan. Eventually we picked up the plans; we both saw the possibilities that a partnership offered us.” Nick has taken over duties from Gijs for both companies. The focus is on management, direction and picking up ad hoc issues. “That way Gijs keeps time to visit customers and to take on more tasks operationally.”
Planning, transportation and lots of hectic activity
“Getting to know clients and colleagues is very important to me, as is growing in the profession. After all, logistics is really quite a different field than real estate management, which I was involved with in my previous job.” The Barnevelder’s enthusiasm is great. “These are long, busy days with lots of new information and a fantastically fun team. Gijs has a tremendous amount of ideas, while also constantly keeping an overview of the company. I want to develop my skills to the point where I can take over tasks from Gijs in all areas.” This is why Nick also rotates throughout the company. “By now I have already gained a lot of knowledge about planning, transport, prices and the people. I really enjoy the hustle and bustle that comes with that.”
Real estate versus logistics
The big differences between real estate and logistics? “With bricks and mortgages, you’re dealing with a different process. Gelder Logistics is a very dynamic company. To call today is to organize immediately, so that a job is on its way or even completed tomorrow. I find that a great challenge.” The former technical manager worked in real estate for 16 years, the last 5.5 of which were for an investor. “As technical manager, I was responsible for technical issues in retail properties and district shopping centers. That included daily tasks, such as solving a leak in a retail building. Solving challenges is a similarity between my previous job and my new job at the courier company as well as at transport broker Gelder Logistics.”
Mileage enthusiast
Outside of work, the energetic manager likes to cover miles on his mountain bike. “From home you can be in Lunteren, Ede, Arnhem or Otterlo in no time. And sometimes we cycle tour rides with a group of people. I also really enjoy skiing, including with my family. When my little son comes down the slope on skis, it’s really enjoyable!” Anyone who would like to meet Nick in person is of course welcome to visit the office!
